Men’s Small Groups start HERE

Posted in Deeper life, Engaging in spiritual friendships., man of God, spiritual growth on January 12, 2010 by scott

Two reasons to join a Men’s Group now:

1.     You need it.  You need the community, the growth, the accountability, and the time dedicated to meeting God.

2.     They need you.  There is a men’s group that will be less effective and complete if you aren’t there.  We’re all on the same team and we need each other!

Small Groups for the first trimester of 2010 will start in February. We currently have three available groups looking for new members. You may contact the group leaders directly prior to the first meeting for more information or directions.  Below is a list of Group Leaders, Meeting Times and Areas of Study which may help inform your decision for which group suits you best.

Bored

Posted in Deeper life, man of God, spiritual growth on January 5, 2010 by scott

Daily prayer and Bible reading bore me. Not always, but…alot of the time. I sit down every morning and crank out my Old Testament and New Testament reading while thinking about what i have to do that day and then i mention each person in my family by name and ask God to make sure good things happen in their lives. Devotional time, DONE! Now on to the reality of my day…

BTW – that kind of an attitude is wicked.

Check out what God said to Isaiah:

“These people come near to me with their mouth
and honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship of me
is made up only of rules taught by men.” Isaiah 29:13

Be honest – what relationship have you ever been involved in that got better the more you coasted? How has your love deepened for anyone who you just “went through the motions” with?  There’s a reason Jesus said that our treasure is where our heart is.

So what am I supposed to do when I find that my prayer and Bible reading time is lifeless? For starters, I need to repent. I need to see that my attitude is wicked and destructive and I need to humbly ask God to forgive me and change me. Then, I need to look for opportunities to connect with Him in ways that make me excited to meet with Him. For some it may be discovering music that speaks to you, getting outdoors, moving your quiet time to a time when you’re more likely to be awake, maybe meeting with someone regularly to do your devotional time together and to share how you are encountering God in the midst of it, read a paraphrase Bible to make the stories fresh, or discover a new way of prayer and Bible study that you’ve never done before.

Recently, I came across a website that reminded me about a type of prayer and Bible reading that has always been powerful for me but that I had neglected.  Its based on the ancient practice of Sacred Reading. Its about interacting with the Bible for the purpose of interacting with Christ. Additionally, there’s a journalling aspect. Did I mention that I hate journalling? I have horrible handwriting and it takes soooooo long for me to write stuff down. But it also slows my mind down and helps cement what I’m learning into my mind.

This morning was the first morning in a while that I was excited about the time I was going to spend with God in prayer and Bible reading. And, even now, 8 hours later, the passage of Scripture that I read is still fresh in my mind. I’m actually looking forward to doing it again tomorrow!

If you’re devotional life is good – keep it up! If its not so good – change it up! Receive God’s forgiveness for drifting and pursue Him with freshness. If you’re interested in Sacred Reading, check out this website: Examen.me

I LIKE TO MOVE IT MOVE IT…

Another result of our current economy is an increase in the frequency of home moves. Expected and unexpected moves are increasing and we regularly get calls from families who have to move and don’t have anyone to help. It’d be great to have some guys who would be willing to be contacted when those needs arrive and who could respond by helping those in need with their move. If you could be available for an occasional move, contact Scott at 947-2080 and he’ll put you on the “AWESOME GROUP OF GUYS WILLING TO HELP FOLKS IN A VERY DIFFICULT THOUGH INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT WAY” list.

2000 > The New Reality

Posted in Money, man of God on February 5, 2009 by scott

This week I had yet another meeting with a guy who is out of work because of the economy. Most of the guys I talk to are hard working guys who don’t want a hand out — they just want a job. They’re putting resumes in everywhere, walking into any establishment they can think of, canvassing the Internet, but finding nothing. These are crazy times we’re living in. One of the phrases we are using a lot around the office these days is “new reality”. I think, like the proverbial frog in the cooker, things got bad so gradually that many of us still think it’s just a new version of an old situation. But I’m becoming more and more convinced that we’ve not seen anything like this before and we need to adjust to the “new reality” that we’ve crossed the line from “hard times” to “desperate times”.

My fear is that we look back five years from now in shock and disbelief that we took no action in helping our friends, our neighbors, our community because we didn’t want to believe things were that desperate. Here is an excerpt from a letter I received this week from one of our familes:

“…really, what we need is work and money. No amount of kindness, sympathy or anything else will help us keep our home. When your basic needs are not being met (or you are in very real danger of losing everything very soon) nothing else matters. You begin to get very desperate. Look, we have given up ever having a “normal” life again. We will never be able to retire or even go on a vacation. But, we need to keep our home in order to survive. It is all we have. We need some place to lie our heads. [my husband] is 56 (even though, yes, I know, he looks and acts much younger) we don’t have time to save up even if he gets a job today. We just want to be able to pay our bills and keep our home. If we lose this we still won’t have enough to pay rent anywhere else. It will be all over…”

This letter describes the way many of the families at The Crossing are feeling. So what can we do? (And by “we” I mean all the folks who haven’t yet arrived at the place the family in the letter has.) The financial faithfulness of many of the folks at The Crossing enables us, as a church community, to help out with things like groceries and utility bills. But that’s usually just a band-aid. When there’s no money coming in, helping with a power bill just postpones the inevitable. What families need is money coming in – they need jobs. (yeah, I know that’s a “duh” statement, but I’m going somewhere with this.)

When I ask myself, “What resource does The Crossing have to help people,” the answer I get is “people” – we’ve got people. With 2000 people showing up on Sunday, that’s a pretty good network to find jobs and help resource people in need!

How do we harness that network to get done what we need to get done? Honestly, I’m not sure. The task seems huge – gigantic. But we’ve got to start somewhere – baby steps, right Bob?

So we’ve added a tab to The Pulse titled “Economic Relief”. On that page, we reference some areas of assistance we can offer as a church and a community, but its potential strength lies in its power to harness the resources of the people of The Crossing. There’s a page where you can list jobs that you know are available, where you can list good furniture or appliances that you’d like to give to families in need, or maybe you’re looking to open up a reasonably priced room for rent to someone losing their home. Most importantly, it’s a place where we can begin to help each other.

Yeah, I know this is a small step towards a solution, but it is a step. And, more importantly, hopefully, it will begin a dialogue – what are you experiencing that tells you whether this a new reality or just a different version of the same old reality? –what can people do to help in these times? –what other resources have you found to help you deal with the current economic situation? Click on the comment box below and weigh in.

If you find yourself currently out of work or in need of resources, check out the Economic Relief tab at The Pulse. And for some encouragement and ideas on dealing with unemployment, check out the article, “Job Loss Survival Guide“.

Is God Green?

Posted in spiritual growth on October 21, 2008 by crossingthepursuit

This weekend, I found myself washing off a paper plate at a friend’s house so i could throw it away! These friend’s of mine are part of neighborhood recycling program – paper and plastic go in one bin, metal in another and food scraps in a third. I don’t know if the plate really had to be washed before we threw it away, but my friend told me i had to. He may have just been messing with me…but, these days, you never know.

I have a hard time figuring out the role Christian’s are supposed to play in ecology and conservation. Are you as confused by the whole thing as I am?
